01
NHS and local authority alcohol services
Community alcohol treatment provided through the NHS or local authority is generally free. Services can include assessment, key-worker appointments, counselling, medication, groups and referrals to specialist care. What is available differs by area, and some services have eligibility criteria or waiting periods.
Funded residential rehab placements may be possible in certain circumstances, but access is not automatic. A GP or local drug and alcohol service can explain the pathway in your area.
02
What affects private residential rehab costs?
Private alcohol rehab is self-funded. Fees can vary according to the length of stay, staff-to-resident ratio, clinical oversight, accommodation, location and whether a medically supported detox is required. A higher price does not automatically mean better treatment, just as a lower price does not necessarily mean poor care.
Look closely at what is being purchased. The therapeutic programme, staff qualifications, safeguarding, medical cover and aftercare are more meaningful than luxury language or hotel-style extras.
- Initial medical and psychological assessment
- Medication and monitoring during supported withdrawal
- Individual and group therapy
- Accommodation, meals and wellbeing activities
- Discharge planning and continuing aftercare

03
Outpatient treatment fees
Private outpatient treatment may be charged by session or as a programme. The total depends on session frequency, practitioner qualifications, psychiatric or medical input and how long support continues. It may cost less than residential care because accommodation and continuous staffing are not included.
When comparing packages, ask how missed sessions are handled, whether family work is included and whether contact between appointments is available.
04
Questions to ask before paying
A reputable provider should be willing to explain fees clearly and give you time to understand the terms. Avoid making a decision based only on urgency, a limited-time discount or a claimed success rate.
- Is the assessment included in the quoted price?
- Are detox medication and external appointments charged separately?
- What happens if the recommended length of stay changes?
- How much aftercare is included, and for how long?
- What are the cancellation and early-departure terms?
05
Balancing affordability and suitability
The right decision should be financially realistic and clinically appropriate. If residential treatment is unaffordable, ask about local services, outpatient care, mutual-aid groups and whether a provider offers different levels of support.
No ethical service should suggest that recovery depends on purchasing the most expensive option. Good decision-making comes from comparing needs, evidence, access and continuing support together.
